GSTR-3B is now hard-locked: what non-editable 3B means for your filing

· 2 मिनिटे

Hard-locking flips GSTR-3B from a form you fill to a summary you approve — every number now flows from upstream data, so the month's real work moves to before the 14th.

For years the open secret of GST filing was that 3B was editable: whatever GSTR-1 and 2B said, you could type your own liability and ITC. That door is closed.

What exactly is locked

| 3B section | Now sourced from | Your edit path | |---|---|---| | Outward supplies & tax (Table 3) | GSTR-1 / IFF, as amended by GSTR-1A | Fix in GSTR-1A before filing 3B | | ITC (Table 4) | GSTR-2B, built from your IMS actions | Accept/Reject/Pending in IMS before the 14th | | Non-2B credits (imports, RCM) | Their own declared fields | Document as you go |

Locking of auto-populated liability applies from the July 2025 tax period; ITC flows through the IMS regime that became the mandatory basis for credit from the October 2025 tax period.

Why the government did it

Editable 3B was the fraud surface: report low in GSTR-1, pay lower in 3B; or claim ITC that no 2B supports — patterns behind a chunk of the ₹1.01 lakh crore fake ITC detected in FY24-25. Locking 3B to system data removes the typo excuse and the fraud lever with one move.

What it means for your month

The filing-day save is gone. If reconciliation used to happen "at 3B time" — adjusting figures until they looked right — that adjustment room no longer exists. The work moves earlier:

  1. By the 11th: your sales are correctly in GSTR-1; errors amended via GSTR-1A.
  2. 11th–13th: IMS actions — what you accept becomes your locked ITC.
  3. 14th: reconcile 2B vs books; chase gaps for next month.
  4. 20th: 3B is now a review-and-pay, not a data-entry session.

Miss steps 1–3 and the locked 3B simply files your mistakes — with the DRC-01C tripwire watching the result.

The upside nobody mentions

Locked 3B is the end of "we'll sort it at filing" — which was always where stuck ITC went to be forgotten. When the credit figure can only come from 2B/IMS, every missing supplier invoice is visibly your money not in the return. The discipline hard-locking forces is precisely the monthly rhythm that keeps credit unstuck and notices unfired.

GST Sathe is built for exactly this regime: bills captured all month, IMS pre-suggested by the 13th, 2B reconciled on the 14th, and a CA-ready bundle before the 20th — so the locked 3B locks in correct numbers. Get early access →

नेहमी विचारले जाणारे प्रश्न

When did GSTR-3B become non-editable?+

GSTN locked auto-populated liability in GSTR-3B starting from the July 2025 tax period (filed in August 2025), after phasing in pre-filled values earlier. ITC figures flow from GSTR-2B/IMS.

I made a mistake in GSTR-1 — how do I fix my 3B now?+

Through Form GSTR-1A: amend the current period's outward supplies before filing 3B, and the corrected figures flow into the locked 3B. After filing, corrections ride in the next period's returns.

Can I still claim ITC that isn't in my GSTR-2B?+

The locked ITC table follows your 2B/IMS. Legitimate claims outside 2B (import IGST, RCM) have their own fields, but the days of typing a higher ITC figure over the auto-populated one are gone — which is exactly what hard-locking was built to stop.

Does hard-locking increase or reduce my notice risk?+

Both: it prevents the accidental over-claims that triggered DRC-01C, but it makes unreconciled data instantly visible — if your books and 2B disagree, the locked 3B forces the issue before filing instead of after.
